KAYLA GARDNER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Kayla is the Drama teacher at Seaquam Secondary School and the Artistic Director of Seaquam Theatre Company. With eight years of teaching experience, she has led the company through five full-scale productions - Journey Through the Decades (2021), Matilda (2022), Newsies (2023), Cinderella (2024), and Shrek the Musical (2025) - with 9 to 5 set to hit the stage in 2026. Each production has showcased her comprehensive leadership in direction, choreography, and vocal instruction. A proud Seaquam Theatre alum, Kayla went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and English Literature, as well as a Bachelor of Education in Theatre and English from the University of British Columbia. In addition to formal training in classical and contemporary voice, RCM piano, and 11 years of dance across multiple disciplines, she has taught voice and piano lessons, led children’s musical theatre classes, stage managed various productions, and spent seven years performing as a Disney princess. Passionate about both theatre and education, Kayla is known for being compassionate, outgoing, organized, resilient, and wholly dedicated to student success.

As Artistic Director, Kayla envisions Seaquam Theatre Company as more than just a high school theatre program. She is committed to producing high-quality, artistically rich shows that reflect the talent and creativity of the student body while uniting the broader community. Her approach challenges students to rise to their fullest potential through advanced choreography, harmonies, and acting techniques. Under her leadership, the company aims to be a well-known, respected program where students take pride not only in their onstage work, but in the collaborative, behind-the-scenes craftsmanship of theatre. Kayla is passionate about fostering a safe, inclusive environment where students are supported and empowered. Through a comprehensive theatre education, students develop real-world skills - collaboration, perseverance, critical thinking, problem-solving, reflection, and so much more - that prepare them for success well beyond the stage.

Kayla believes deeply in the power and relevance of theatre in today’s world. For youth, theatre is a vital space for creativity, expression, and self-discovery. It nurtures empathy, confidence, and community, providing students with a sense of purpose and belonging. Through storytelling, performance, and shared experience, theatre empowers young minds and hearts to dream boldly and speak truthfully. At Seaquam Theatre Company, Kayla fosters not only the making of memorable productions, but the making of meaningful connections - both within the ensemble and throughout Delta and beyond.
